Xynisteri

This white variety is the dominant one in the number of areas and is cultivated to the West of Troodos such as around Lefkara. It is used in the production of Commandaria wines, sweet and dry white wines. It is also called Local White. The top is hairy and light green in colour. The young leaves are shiny and glabrous. The adult leaves are large, orbiculate, thick, pearly, 5-lobed with lateral sinuses. The petiolar sinus is in narrow lyre shape. The teeth are pointed and narrow. The underside of the leaf is glabrous but spidered. The clusters are average size, loosely packed with a side cluster. The grapes are slightly ovate, average size, golden yellow, maturing at the begging of September. Xynisteri grapes are used for table grapes. At present, it is the main white variety cultivated in Cyprus for winemaking and is planted over 5000 hectares.
