Maratheftiko

This black variety makes for a very concentrated wine of which the tannin, fragrance, color and structure are extremely close to those of Cabernet, very promising but too rare. The top of the shoots is white and fluffy. The young leaves are white and fluffy, greenish and downy. The adult leaves are large, dark green and the veins being red colored. They are orbiculate, pearly, 5-lobed with concave upper sinuses. The petiolar sinus is narrow V shape. The teeth are pointed, very narrow and in a double row. Clusters are average size, compact with usually small, ellispoid shiny black grapes. They are juicy and mature at the start of September. It is producing a very dark wine with pleasant bouquet but its sensitive to mildew. Unfortunately, this variety has flowers that are female with reflexive stamens and leads to a certain color when it is grown alone. Pure wines produced in Cyprus since 1989 are colored and have a distinct fragrance, making it a true quality variety.
