Mavro

This variety is also known as Local Black, it produces the best wines known as Commandaria. It matures towards the end of July in Larnaka and during October at Prodromos. The top of the shoots is white and fluffy. The young leaves are pearly, yellowish and the underside is fluffy. The adult leaves are cuneiform, dark green, soft, 5-lobed and pointed lateral sinuses. The petiolar sinus is an open U shape. The teeth are ribbed and average size, the undersize is glabrous. The clusters are very large, spread out, elongated and cylindroconical. The grapes are very large, ovate and dark red. The flesh is very firm, maturing in September. Mavro is the main black variety cultivated in Cyprus for winemaking, covering some 14000 hectares. The maturation of plain begins at the end of July, following the mountainous regions up to October.
